"A Country House Wedding Venue That’s Exclusively Yours"
This first time you visit Knowsley Hall, from the moment you press the button and the large iron gates slowly open revealing the long driveway through the private walled estate leading up to Knowsley Hall Stately Home you can't help but be impressed by the grandeur of it all, it really is a stunning venue to get married.
“At the heart of the Estate and the Stanley family is Knowsley Hall, Merseyside’s only stately home. It is believed that a building of sorts has been on the current Hall’s site since the 12th century, but the earliest part of today’s building dates from about 1500. As various Earls of Derby sought to make their mark and celebrate their good fortunes through the additions and alterations to the building, the Hall today is a fascinating structure boasting a Georgian façade and some extremely fine Jacobean, Baroque and Victorian interiors.”
Getting Wedding Ready

The Wedding Ceremony
The decadent and romantic Stucco Ballroom was created in the 18th century to link the Royal apartments with the rest of the house. This stunning room is where you'll exchange your wedding vows, watched by up to 132 of your invited guests. The enchanting Stucco Ballroom with its gold encrusted leaf detail and original fireplace simply exudes opulence and romance.
The House and Gardens
“After your ceremony and during the warmer months, enjoy drinks and canapes on the terrace, overlooking the manicured gardens, fountain and lake whilst reveling in the enchanting photo opportunities that await you or if the weather isn't playing ball, within the cosy and luxurious surroundings of the Walnut Drawing Room. The rooms in the house also offer stunning backdrops to capture some beautiful photographs whilst enjoying drinks in the Walnut Drawing Room overlooking the gardens and lake.”
The stunning gardens and parkland were essentially created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown around 1775-6, during which time he actually flooded the 62 acre lake to feed the water gardens around the Hall. The gardens were extended in the 19th- century and the parkland was enclosed by a 9.5 mile stone wall featuring many follies along its length, including a rather wonderful Octagon designed by none other than Robert Adam. There is also a boat house designed by William Burn and a log cabin presented by the people of Canada.
The History Of Knowsley Hall
This historic Estate has been in the ownership of the Stanley family since 1385, and from that time the history of the family has been closely intertwined with the history of the country as a whole. King Henry VII created Lord Stanley the 1st Earl on the battlefield of Bosworth; the 7th Earl was beheaded for his loyalty to Charles 1; the 12th Earl started the world-famous horse race and the 14th Earl was Prime Minister to Queen Victoria three times. For hundreds of years the Derby family have significantly contributed to world history. During your private stay you will have the opportunity to see the extraordinary watercolours of exotic birds and animals that Edward Lear, the famous poet painted in the gardens of the Knowsley Estate whilst he lived and worked on the Estate in the 1830’s. Whilst spending time with the Earls grand children Lear wrote the legendary nonsense poem ‘The Owl & The Pussy Cat’.
Discover the fascinating links between the Earls of Derby and Shakespeare as evidence suggests that Shakespeare visited Knowsley Hall during the 1600’s and performed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the 6th Earls wedding in front of Queen Elizabeth I.
Knowsley’s historic connection to William Shakespeare, through the support he received from the Earls of Derby, sets the scene for the Shakespeare North Playhouse in nearby Prescot, which opens in Summer 2022. This brings with it the opportunity to combine your stay at Knowsley Hall with performances of Shakespeare’s most famous plays set in a 350 seat theatre modelled on the authentic cockpit-in-court design popular during the Elizabethan era. This undeniably enchanting connection between the Earls of Derby and Shakespeare provide an appealing historical connection to what will be a truly modern cultural asset for the north of England.
